Summer is upon us and as it is, it can get quite hot in Vienna. After weeks of rain and gray clouds, it is sunny again and the, of course, perfect for generous servings of ice cream. Today I am going to share with you the scoop about my favorite place where you can get genuine, Italian-quality ice cream while still enjoying the Viennese flair.
The first time I visited Gelateria la Romana was two years ago but in between, I haven’t found another place in town which can top this one. Back in 2016, I heard about this ice cream salon through a friend and it seemed that no one in my circle knew about it, and now a few years later it is a favorite to many. Apparently, Vienna is one of the many locations around Europe, so if you have been to Italy, you might have been lucky to have tried their ice cream. Hidden in the side streets of Mariahilferstrasse, it has the perfect location – central, but far from the crowds. So, after a few months of cold weather, it was finally time to return to Gelateria la Romana and enjoy their flavorful assortment. And I have to tell you, they never fail to deliver!
On a Tuesday afternoon, after work, I thought that the best thing to do to wind off is to head for something sweet. Since the thermometer started showing more than 25 degrees already, something to cool me down seemed appropriate. I must admit that by the look of the long line in front, I felt kind of discouraged. The garden space also looked quite packed but I am the kind of person who doesn’t give up on good food, especially ice cream. There were a few empty tables inside and since we had in mind to order and not take a cone to go, it was more than fine.
After browsing through the menu for what felt for ages, I had my heart set on a brioche with three scoops of ice cream. All of them have fancy Italian names (so if you speak Italian you are in for a treat) which translated into peanut butter, caramel and strawberry. Although their ice is to die for, I didn’t have high expectations regarding the brioche. But let me tell you, after the very first bite, I was sold for it! The combination tasted, to say the least, perfect. The softness and vanilla taste of the brioche matched perfectly with both the fruity and the dense flavors of the melting ice cream.
Of course, the menu is filled with all sorts of indulgences and I cannot begin to list the things you can get here. Apart from the other fifteen or so tastes that are offered, you can enjoy freshly made, warm crepes with a scoop of ice cream or chocolate, cakes with ice cream filling as well as their signature cheesecake. Plus, if you are in the mood of enjoying a tub of ice cream while binge-watching the new series that you’ve started on Netflix, they offer takeaway ice cream which you can get in a much bigger packaging to go to share, or, you know, eat by yourself, we don’t judge!
So, if you are still wondering where to get your next scoop of ice cream, give Gelatera la Romana a try and thank me afterwards.
